Why Shopping Small Matters
I want to tell you today that I wrote this entire blog post and somehow deleted it when I was almost done. Before saving. So after I finished crying a river, I am rewriting again because this is that important! I have become passionate about small businesses and their owners in the last two years and I want you to be too! Shopping small on Saturday matters.
Shop small was started in 2010 and sponsored by American Express to encourage all of us, no matter where we live in this country, to shop small brick & mortar stores in our town to support the small businesses and the local economy. It was a way for the mom & pop stores to compete with big retailers on Thanksgiving weekend. For me, it's a way to support others in the trenches with me. Working and building their business, brick-by-brick.
You guys, running and building a small business is hard. As I shared with a group here at One Foot last night, I initially thought it would be way more fun and glamorous. It's hard work. And even when you work hard, sometimes it doesn't show up on your bottom line.
As I learn the ropes of running a business or two, I confess to you many days I'm experimenting. Not with coaching, because I'm well trained for that. But with marketing. And processes. And networking. And products. And whatever else will help people get to know what I do and change their lives.
Which is why I'm on team SHOP SMALL this year. To be honest, I've been on team shop small before I was a business owner. But since becoming a business owner and coaching other small business owners, I've become more aware of the work it takes for that mom & pop shop to make it and passionate about supporting my fellow business owners thrive and flourish as they follow their dreams.
I'm sure you have your faves, but I wanted to highlight a handful of places I love!
For the Local Peeps
I love to support the small business owner in my own back yard, so check out some of these gift giving ideas right down the street from you!
Give the Gift of Cake
Tales of a Two AM Baker is my fave. Once you get to know Leanne you will love her. Still in her early twenties, I'm inspired by her passion and wish I had thought of starting a business in my twenties! You go get 'em, Leanne! Tales of a Two AM Baker makes unique cupcakes for your wedding, birthday party, Christmas party, or purchase a dozen for a gift or gathering. She creates unique flavors like the Smores Cupcake or Blueberry Pancake (topped with a piece of bacon). Yum! Get in touch with Leann and order up some yumminess.
Give the Gift of Theater
One of my fave local places in the Maple Grove/Osseo area is the Yellow Tree Theatre. A small theatre located in downtown Osseo, they have a robust schedule of plays the whole family will love. I've been several times and have never been disappointed. Give the gift of presence with a live theater experience this Christmas. Check out Yellow Tree's website here.
Give the Gift of Inspiring Jewelry
I met Cambria recently at an after church lunch where I first heard about She of Noble Character. Cambria and her husband started this online business out of passion to encourage women to be in God's Word and live out their faith. Their jewelry is handcrafted and you will love the message on each piece.
Give the Gift of Life Coaching
Let's face it, I'm not so great at tootling my own horn. But I wouldn't have started One Foot Coaching if I didn't believe in life coaching and think it would make a fantastic gift for someone in your life. Pop on over to my store where you can purchase my unique life coaching Bible studies or a gift certificate to use on group or individual life coaching. And check back in 2017 as I roll out my brand new coaching packages like my Discover You mini coaching package ( a mini coaching session(s) as you discover how you're wires, your values, and begin taking steps to live your life and faith intentionally) and other great products coming your way! Shop One Foot Coaching today.
For Those Who Like To Shop From Home
Not all of us love to fight the traffic and lines and parking lots, and more and more of us shop online in our jammies. So I couldn't leave you with three online stores I'm loving for this Christmas.
You guys, I first heard about Mercy Candles from my fave podcast The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey. Mercy candles are hand-poured in small batches with quality products. You can give back while shopping as 50% of the proceeds from their mason jar candles go to fight human trafficking. They have a yummy flavor for Christmas called The Thrill of Hope and Mandles (scents your man will love). Head on over to Mercy Candles to check out the options.
If One Foot Coaching and an online store would have a baby, it would Bravelets. Half delighted and half mad I didn't think of it first, these delightful bracelets, necklaces, watches and more will remind you to be brave with your life. Check out their fun designs.
The Giving Keys
For those of you pick one word each year or know someone who does, this is the perfect gift. I've been eyeing The Giving Keys for several years for my own words. At their website, you can purchase necklaces made from a key with a word engraved on it. You can purchase standard words like courage, faith, and hope. Or you can get a custom word. Originally designed for you to wear and give away to someone who needs your words, these creative key themed jewelry really are the perfect gift. Hint Hint! Check out the keys today.
There are so many more to choose from, aren't there? There are Etsy shops and direct sales for Norwex, essential oils, 31 bags, and Rodan & Fields to name a few. I wish I could buy from them all this Christmas season, but I'm a poor business owner!
But I'd like to issue a challenge to the One Foot Community. Let's intentionally choose to shop small this holiday season. Let's encourage our friends and family who are pursuing their dream and starting and building a business.
And if you're a small business owner and I missed you, I'd love if you would use the comments here to post about your business so we can all find out where to shop and how we can support your business this weekend and all year long!
