Choosing Your Word for 2017 - Part 2

I have one question for you.  Are you ready?  You know, are you ready for Christmas?  And New Years?  And well, really, the end of 2016?

Is it me, or does it seem like we just did this?  Like yesterday?  Personally, 2016 has flashed before my very eyes.  And if you're anything like me, in the midst of everyday life, it's hard to press pause and process last year and get intentional with going into 2017.

Many of you know I've fallen in love with this idea of choosing one word for your year.  For a little more info on choosing your word or what it's all about, check out Choosing Your Word for 2017 - Part 1 here.

Many of you have asked a couple of key questions...

  • Where do you get your word?
  • How can I find the word that's just right for me?

Those are great questions.  Another great questions I've gotten since being on my one word journey is What do I do once I choose my word?

All great questions. For some ideas on choosing your word, check out my last blog post or my new free guide.  For what to do with your word once you have it, keep reading.

In my first year of choosing a word, I had no idea what I was doing.  I picked a word.  I thought it out.  But to perfectly honest, I didn't get to all the things to keep the word in front of me. And what I ended up with was a word I could do over again the next year.

True confession: that happens about every year.  But in the process of choosing a word, I'm learning to choose grace as well and allow myself the freedom to not "do" my word perfectly.

On the flip side, I've learned a few things in my one word travels and there some great things you and I can do to ensure our word makes it at least January 2nd.

Journal Regularly

If you're anything like me, you are an enthusiastic journaler for about 5 minutes.  I'm sorry people, that's just the way it is.  So you can imagine that journalling regularly sounds about as thrilling as an afternoon at the dentist.

I feel you.  BUT..... Journalling regularly can help you assess how you're doing with your word and any adjustments you want to make.  If you love to journal, by all means, journal about your word once a week or more often if you feel compelled.  For those of us who struggle, try scheduling a journalling day.  Maybe the 1st day of every month for a few minute assessment on how we're doing with that word can go a long way.

Pick A Bible Verse

I've had some good years with my word and some not so good years.  The difference?  Making sure I bathe my word in God's Word.  Right?  So, here's my challenge to you.  Don't just pick one word.  Pick a verse that goes with it.  And don't just pick a verse.  If you memorize nothing else in 2017, memorize the verse that goes with your word.  Okay, I'll stop now.  I was starting to sound bossy!

Journey With A Friend

You and I were never meant to do life alone.  We can't pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and expect to live out our word.  A little accountability over coffee is just what the doctor ordered.

So, grab a friend, share your words with each other, and meet regularly for encouragement and accountability.  If you haven't noticed by that annoying pop up or the giant ad in the middle of this post - I've developed a free resource to help you choose and plan out your one word for 2017.  Complete with some great coaching tools to help you choose your word.  Why not download a copy and complete it with a friend. You will love spending time with your friend and the coffee - just sayin'.

Find An Anchor

For several of my years, my oh so crafty friend Heidi has made me an anchor.  She has no idea that what she is making is an anchor.  In life coaching, an anchor is a physical reminder of your intention.  It can be a sign with your word on it.  A piece of jewelry.  A picture.  That verse you picked out written on a card.  It's design is to remind you of your word and how you want to live it out.

No one said that choosing your word for the year would be easy.  If you're struggling to come up with just the right word, you're in good company.  But here's the thing:  One foot faith embraces hard things. One foot faith chooses to be intentional with each new step.  And choosing your word can make next year your most purposeful yet.

Did you choose your word already?  I have my concept but still looking for a word that describes it.  I'd love to pray for you on your one word journey so let me know your word and let's journey in 2017 together!
